Create Your Own Candy Bark

The other day, the kids and I were having rather 'long' day.  All you mother's know what that's like.

I needed a distraction.  And fast.

Baking cookies takes too long...

Candy doesn't last long enough...

As I was rummaging through my pantry, I found exactly what I needed to make..

Candy Bark.

It's no secret you can make your own and put whatever the heck you want in it, too.

But the kids loved picking out what treats they wanted to put in it.

Their favorites:  Almonds, marshmallows, Smarties and jellybeans.

Here's how to do it.

Get your supplies:  wax paper, baking sheets, chocolate wafers (chocolate chips work too!), a microwaveable dish (I used my glass measuring cup) and any sort of treat you want.

Other ideas:  dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, etc), crumbled up cookies, nuts (peanuts, pecans, etc), pretzels, or any other candy you want.

You can also use candy melts to make it more colorful like I did.

Cut a piece of wax paper to cover your baking sheet.

Place your chocolate wafers into a microwaveable dish.  Place in your microwave and set on low (if you have a setting) for 1 minute at a time.  

After each minute, give it a good stir to make sure it's all melting thoroughly.

My cup took only 2 minutes to melt throughout (which was about 1 3/4 cup of chocolate).

Pour it onto your wax paper and spread out so it's about 0.5 cm thick.  Use your judgment, it doesn't have to be exact.

Now get the kids to go crazy with their treats.  They can smush them into the chocolate or just plop them in, whatever their hearts desire.

As they were decorating, I prepared the blue candy melts the same way as the chocolate.  Microwaving every minute (if you are using less than a cup, go for 30 seconds at a time) and stirring until smooth.

I then drizzled the candy melts over top.  

I know.  Mine was more like messy plops in a random fashion.  Ah well, the kids liked it.

Place your pan into the fridge and refrigerate for about an hour.

Once cool and hard, break your bark up into pieces however large or whatever size you like.

I also made some for the adults of the house.  

Mmm.  

Dark chocolate, almonds, dried cranberries and blueberries.

Go enjoy your simple, yet delicious candy bark.

The best part was how much of a distraction it was for the kids.  Also entertaining.. and of course, yummy.  

Candy is always a nice distraction.  Not sure if I should be ashamed of that or not.  Nothing a little toothbrushing won't fix, right!?
